Welcome to Nehru Trophy Boat Race 2011

The Nehru Trophy Boat Race is an annual event which is organized on the second Saturday of August each year at the Punnamada Lake in Alappuzha, Kerala.This year's Nehru Trophy Boat Race will be held on Saturday, August 13 th.

The major attraction of the boat race is the competition of chundanvallams or snake boats,measuring over 100 feet in length, with a raised prow.The first Race took place in 1952 when Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru flagged off the event and distributed the prizes.The Race has been named after him ever since and over the years,has acquired fame across the globe.

All arrangements have been completed for this year's mega water carnival.57 boats will compete in this water olympics.For the first time in the history of the Nehru Trophy Boat Race,a Royal Ticket of Rs.1 Lakh has been introduced.The list of contestants follows:

Highlights :-

33 teams participated in various categories in the contest held on 7th August, at Municipal Grounds, Alappuzha.An elocution contest was held for the High School students on 2nd August by the Boat Race Committee and the winners' names announced. 

The vanchippatu contest was held on August 7th at Municipal Grounds, for men, women and students. Kayamkulam MLA C.K. Sadashivan inaugurated the contest. The Teams that were divided into those of men, women, boys, girls, juniors and sub-juniors, tested their vocal talents by singing various compositions in different styles ranging from the Aranmula, Vechupattu styles to the Kuttanad style.

The Publicity Committee is conducting a competition for predicting the 'Winner of this year's Nehru Trophy'.The winner will receive a gold coin sponsored by Palathra Jewellers, Alappuzha. 

The multi national team of women from UAE led by Ms.Julie Amer of Mountain High is participating in this year's competition and will join hands with the Kuttanadan women rowers from Vembanad Vanitha Boat Club, Punnamada in Chellikkada' in Thekkanod category..

Tickets are available from various Govt. Offices of Alappuzha, Ernakulam and Kottayam District and from the Office of the District Tourism Promotion Council and Tourism Office Alappuzha.
